JAGUAR SONGS
Label: Cello Classics, London – April 2010
Collected cello works by Paul Desenne
Nancy Green, cello
Strings Magazine Editor's Choice July 2010
"The cello takes center stage on Jaguar Songs (Cello Classics), a robust and engaging recording of contemporary works by Venezuelan composer Paul Desenne. The gifted cellist Nancy Green, who studied with Jacqueline du Pré and has won numerous awards, plays all the parts: for solo, three, and four cellos. Desenne has a knack for blending 18th-century Bach counterpoint and 21st-century cello technique. The title work is a four-movement suite for solo cello. Desenne explains that in Amazonian mythology, the jaguar represents blood and death. Whether these visceral pieces are sculpted as soundscapes or dances, Green supplies immediacy and power to these performances." G.C.

Self-published CD – Caracas 2000
Collective studio creations by Paul Desenne, Alonso Toro and Pedro Vásquez,
exploring forgotten roots of Latin American music through fictional (and humorous)
recreations. The nine original pieces range from quartets including Venezuelan
cuatro (small guitar), Renaissance cornetto, Hawaïan bamboo clarinet and electric
cello, to gigantic tribal fantasies involving many percussionists, a large choir and
other guest players on diverse instruments.
